Work with Livia

Pavilion

  • Type: university project, defended November 2013

The brief asked for a pavilion whose form expresses its structure. Livia worked with surfaces deformed by gravity, in the spirit of Gaudí's hanging catenary models. A computer simulation let a surface sag under gravity. Turning the result upside down gives the structure.

Livia tested the simulation on a 1:50 model made only of folded cardboard. The model reproduced the whole volume and proved stronger than the plain material would suggest.
