For both editions, Livia worked out how to divide the stage surface into panels.
The brief kept two ellipses, changed from the previous edition. It also kept the textiles used the year before, and asked for something different from the previous year.
The technical conditions matched 2017, with criteria for projection, lighting, and access. The stage needed a fairly well-defined surface so that projections would read clearly. It also had to take artistic lighting when nothing was projected, and let the DJ reach the central area.
The textile strips were printable canvas. Their edges were sewn by hand so they could be fixed with cables. The site photographs come from the organiser. The assembly diagrams come from the installation guide that Livia prepared for the crew.
The full assembly sequence is in the Collections tab Untold Galaxy Stage.
The two ellipses were given, but how to close the surface between them was left to study. The form could not move far from a minimal surface, or projections on it would distort. The model also had to look good as an object under simple lights and work for fabrication. Livia studied the material and the choice of solution together with the company that built the stage. Mindscape took the site photographs.
The last diagrams compare two solutions. The final version was approved and checked. The first proposal did not go ahead: its joints took too much labour, and the material could not withstand the tension during assembly.
